Booking Your Session
Popular times to document in your child’s life follow important milestones and each child is different. Newborn portraits are a must. First smiles are fun to capture as well as both crawling and walking stages as they explore their environment. A first birthday portrait has become a time-honored tradition.
The preferred method of booking your session is by phone, although email is also an option. It is during this time that I will answer any questions for you that you may have. Should you prefer it, in-home consultations are also available. It is here that Dorothy can meet your family, discuss and choose clothing, the style of photography, finished print sizes and placing that will most compliment your home and reflect your personal vision.
Setting is a hugely important decision to consider since the right backdrop can say so much about you and your family. Dorothy Snyder Photography offers the option of on-location sessions as well as a studio session in your home for fewer than five subjects. Some popular places for photographs are local beaches, parks and various downtown locations.
Dorothy Snyder Photography is also available to shoot your portraits in other cities. Travel expenses will apply, so please email for details.
The selection of proper clothing for your portrait is a critical factor in the preparation for a successful portrait. If the clothing is noticeable in a portrait, it could easily become a distraction. The key with the clothing you choose is simplicity, but with style. In group photos, avoid patterns that are too bold. White, denim, khaki and black are all good choices for family portraits. You don’t have to match, but you do have to coordinate. For child portraits, trendy colorful fabrics are best! Fun prints, polka dots, trendy colors, layers, hats on babies & toddlers of all types will make for adorable photographs to share with family and friends. If you have a special outfit or item, bring it along and I will help you make a decision about what will be best for the portrait. Try to keep the bottom (pants) darker than what you’re wearing on top. The darker clothing will draw the viewers attention away from the face.
Clothing for group portraits must be carefully selected to blend the bodies together. A good test is to lay your items out on the bed or floor and see if any one item(s) stand out. If they do, you can be sure that they will in the portrait. Keep in mind socks and shoes too – although bare feet are best, especially with little children. If your little ones are going shoeless, please remove socks and shoes at least 30 minutes prior so that the marks will not be visible.
Simplicity is the key in a maternity portrait. This session is all about the pregnant form. I suggest anything that will accentuate the body. A soft draping dress, anything form fitting, solid colors are preferable.
During the Session
Sessions may last anywhere from one to three hours. Please take this into consideration when booking your appointment. Your session will go much more smoothly if you pick a time when your child is at his or her best. Newborn sessions should take place within the first two weeks of the child’s life. It is during this time that they will spend a majority of their time sleeping and are less aware of their surroundings. For Petography, the best time to photograph your dog is when he/she are tired and hungry. This is especially true for hyper dogs!
Please limit clothing changes to two or three outfits. If you’d like more clothing options, additional fees may apply.
After the Session
Proofs will be available online for viewing three to five days after the session. They will remain online for a period of four weeks, during which time you and your family may place orders. Once payment has been made, please allow two weeks for delivery of prints and four weeks for Giclee canvas prints. If you really need your portraits in a hurry, rush orders are accepted on all traditional and canvas portraits at double the price. Storytelling albums, due to their special nature, take six to eight weeks for delivery. Rush orders are not accepted on Storybooks, due to the length of time required by the publisher.
Session fees are due at the time of the session and print orders are due when the order is placed, before processing can begin. Payment can be made by cash, check (made payable to Dorothy Snyder and mailed directly to Dorothy Snyder) and credit card. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted, as are debit cards with a Visa/MasterCard logo.
There is a 7% sales tax added to all orders, regardless of location. Prices are subject to change at any time and without notice.
